Martin’s work to raise the drinking age back to 20, as well as restrictions on the number of liquor outlets, was instrumental in setting up a Law Commission Review.
The result of that Review, which examined issues around alcohol use and abuse, contains many recommendations.
The Government now supports giving councils more say in the number of liquor outlets and their whereabouts.
Solutions are not easy but this is an important opportunity for local communities to work together to try to change our binge drinking culture.
There is still much work to be done on Hamilton’s local alcohol plan to minimise ongoing social harm.
