At the last Council elections Martin highlighted the fact that the city has accumulated significant and concerning debt over the past eight years. Much of this is due to the rapid expansion of Hamilton.
However, a significant proportion of the city debt was due also to the previous Council (of which Martin was not a member) supporting the V8 streetrace and constructing the Claudelands Events Centre. It is, however, ratepayers who will ultimately foot the bill in these tough economic times.
At the same time we need to continue to invest in critical infrastructure. Councillors need to grapple with these complex questions; questions of NEEDS, not WANTS.
Martin has assisted the current Council team in finding solutions which have involved reduction of spending on future projects which would have meant a significant blow-out in city debt.
As member of the Council team, Martin brings solid experience and an ability to work with many people to find a way forward for the interests of the city and ratepayers.
The challenges ahead remain serious.
